Irene M. Bettag, 94, of Saint Meinrad, died Monday, August 8th at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand. She was born October 26, 1921 in Mariah Hill to Gilbert & Frances (Bockting) Gogel. She married Alvin Bettag on October 23, 1945 in Mary Help Of Christians Church, Mariah Hill. He preceded her in death on April 8, 1981. Survivors include five sons, Daniel (Mary Ann) Bettag of Ferdinand, Ronald (Diane) Bettag of Chicago, IL., Anthony (Annie) Bettag of St. Peters, MO., William Bettag of Denver, CO., Gerald (Beth) Bettag of Terre Haute; one daughter, Joan (Chuck) Caldemeyer of Chandler; fourteen grandchildren & one step-grandchild; sixteen great-grandchildren & two step great-grandchildren; one sister, Romilda Westenhofer of Louisville, Ky.; one brother, Andrew "Jack" (Philomena) Gogel of Mariah Hill. She was preceded in death by a son, Eugene Bettag; a daughter-in-law, Marianne Bettag; one sister, Catherine Rasche and five brothers, Tom, Fred, Bernard, Leo, & James Gogel. Irene was a homemaker. She was a member of Saint Meinrad Catholic Church and its Ladies Sodality, Oblates Of Saint Benedict, and Saint Meinrad Senior Citizens. Irene enjoyed quilting, baking, (especially cookies) & she enjoyed being with family, friends & her grandchildren. Funeral services 10:00 AM CDT Friday in Saint Meinrad Catholic Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
